Like the “DJ” part in his moniker implies, Chris Thompson aka DJ Variant’s journey of sonic experimentation began behind the decks, pushing the sounds of drum & bass. Although he would go on to champion many forms of the genre, first as DJ and then as a budding producer, he would always find himself gravitating back to the deeper, more melodic and emotive side of things. Drawing from that same kind of sonic palette he ventured into the world of dubstep production, finding renewed inspiration in a new splinter scene grounded in bass introspection. Aided by a solid understanding of atmospherics and keen dancefloor intuition, his new compositions – both solo, and alongside frequent collaborator Organik – caught the ears of some of stateside’s leading proponents of the sound. With releases on Phantom Hertz and new productions in the wings, Variant’s continued commitment to his craft is paying off. Lucky for us, he’s really just getting started.
